8. Moodle Teaching with AI

Course Description

This 8-hour workshop about Moodle in AI is intended for Educators who are already teaching with Moodle. Ideally teachers who have already completed the training Basics of Moodle for Teachers but not a strict requirement. Participants will gain understanding on what Generative AI is, write effective AI prompts for tools such as Chat GPT, use AI to enhance Moodle courses, and how teachers and your learners can use AI responsibly.

General Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to;

  1. Explain briefly the key terms associated with AI including Large Language Model and Prompt engineering.

    • Artificial Intelligence (AI): AI refers to the simulation of human intelligence by machines that are programmed to think, learn, and solve problems.

    • Large Language Model (LLM): An advanced AI model trained on vast amounts of text data to understand and generate human-like language.

    • Prompt Engineering: The practice of crafting specific and clear instructions (prompts) to guide AI in generating accurate and relevant responses.

  2. Provide examples of effective prompts;

    • For writing assistance

    • For brainstorming

    • For lesson planning

    • Course Content Generation

    • Discussion Forum Topics

    • Engagement Activities

  1. Identify at least four AI tools useful in their teaching;

    • ChatGPT/OpenAI: Generates lesson plans, explains complex topics, and creates student engagement activities.

    • Moodle AI Plugins:Moodle offers AI-driven plugins, such as IntelliBoard, for detailed analytics and personalized recommendations.

    • H5P Interactive Content Tool: Although not AI-based, when paired with AI tools, H5P enables creating interactive videos, quizzes, and activities tailored for Moodle courses.

    • Moodle AI Subsystems

  2. Identify a number of ways AI can help enhance their Moodle courses, and

    • AI can analyze student progress and learning styles to suggest custom resources or courses.

    • Educators can use AI to create quizzes, lesson plans, or discussion prompts, reducing manual effort and increasing course variety.

    • AI tools like IntelliBoard provide insights into student behavior, predicting potential dropouts and enabling timely interventions.

  3. Outline the main ethical issues relating to generative AI.

    • Privacy and Data Security:Integrating AI with Moodle involves handling sensitive student data, raising concerns about compliance with data protection laws like GDPR.

    • Academic Integrity:Students may misuse AI tools like ChatGPT to generate essays or complete assignments, risking plagiarism and undermining learning outcomes.

    • Transparency and Accountability:AI decisions or content generation lack transparency, making it difficult for educators to verify accuracy and relevance.

    • Over-Reliance on AI:Overuse of AI may reduce critical thinking and problem-solving skills in students and diminish the teacher’s role in shaping education.
